This place was ruled by Yadav dynasty in the ancient times, and later by Mughals and Peshwas, which could be traced with the existence of magnificent forts. The credit of discovering this hilly region goes to Sir Elphinstone, who encountered this place in 1871. It was earlier known as AoLonali, because of its topographical features like caves, hills and dense forest. This place is known as a chikki hub, a sweetmeat prepared from jaggery and nuts. This delicacy is relished by many visitors and is reckoned as one of the major reason for tourist attraction. Festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali, Dussehra and Pune fest is celebrated with pomp and zeal. The presence of famous Ekvira temple and Bhairavnath temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva garners many devotees during Navratri and Mahashivratri respectively. Marathi is a widely spoken language in this place.
